One Last Chance

by Stan C. Countz

We’d take long walks, we’d talk and dance
Whispered thoughts ‘bout our savored dreams
I prayed you’d give me half a chance
Talked about our favorite things
We fell in love, we took the leap
Bought a ring and said our vows
Spoke promises we’d couldn’t keep
Wish I knew then what I know now

I paid more attention to my automobiles
Than I did to my kids and my wife
But I still expected her to make my meals
And to be the queen of my life
But, just like my Jeep, you’ve got to keep it up
You’ve got to change the oil and the plugs
Every now and then you’ve got to fill ‘er up
It’s just the same in the game of love

It’s a shame we didn’t keep the flame burnin’
It’s too late for us but it ain’t too late for you
Just the same, it was a lesson worth learnin’
If I had one last chance, this is what I’d do…

I’d listen a lot more and shout a lot less
Take more walks, talk about her dress
Open her door, take time for romance
That’s what I’d do if I had one last chance
If I had one last chance…
I’d pay more attention to her needs and likes
Please, don’t make the same mistakes I made
Did I forget to mention I paid too high a price?
If I’dve paid attention, maybe she’d have stayed
So don’t make the same mistakes I made…

I paid more attention to my automobiles
Than I did to my kids and my wife
But I still expected her to make my meals
And to be the queen of my life
But just like my Jeep, you’ve got to keep it up
You’ve got to change the oil and the plugs
Every now and then you’ve got to fill ‘er up
It’s just the same in the game of love

So listen a lot more and shout a lot less
Take more walks, talk about her dress
Open her door, take time for romance
This just might be your one last chance
